SMMC is organized as a non-profit corporation exclusively for charitable, religious, educational or scientific purposes under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code or corresponding sections of any future federal tax code. The bylaws were originally signed into effect August 31, 2010.
The Sustain Mid Maine Coalition defines sustainability as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future. The SMMC aims to promote energy conservation and alternative energy use for Kennebec Valley area residents, businesses, and municipal operations, thereby reducing energy costs for taxpayers while also cutting harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
We have three internal committees who work hard to meet SMMC goals. They consist of Fundraising, Governance, and Membership. The SMMC’s primary activities are carried about by 8 teams, each comprised of a board member, chair or co-chair, and members.
Working for a Sustainable Kennebec Community
We understand that we are part of an interdependent world of natural resources, human communities, and economic systems. Founded in 2009 by the town managers of Waterville and Winslow, our coalition supports sustainability in everything, including local food, energy, transportation, permaculture, natural resources, and more.
Working for a Clean Energy Future
We are a proactive and resilient organization. By advocating the use of natural resources, including wind, water, wood, and sun, SMMC aims to meet the needs of everyone in our communities and beyond, while at the same time preserving the integrity of resources for the future.
